He discussed my concerns about the risk of DVT, respected the fact that I was also a doctor, and agreed a plan with me to reduce the risk. I heard him discussing his plan with the Surgeon. I witnessed mutual respect and team work in interaction with his colleagues. He acknowledged my natural anxiety being a patient having a General Anesthetic for the first time, and for significant cancer surgery. His calm style, easy professionalism and banter put me at ease. He explained everything, gave me opportunities to ask questions, and sought my permission for siting of the iv line. I felt cared for and confident in his care. I hope he is the Anesthetist when I have my next procedure.

The placement of the cannula was very painful I have had one previously administered by another Anaesthetist with no problem. On removal I lost a fair amount of blood.my hand is now very bruised and painful so all in all not a good experience.

Response from Dr Christopher Marshall

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad cannulation experience. I'm afraid these things can vary considerably in terms of pain and obviously it wasnt a good experience for you. I wasn't there for its removal, usually a simple dressing elevation of the area and pressure will stop it bleeding and stop it bruising. I'm sorry this didn't occur.

Dr Christopher was very good, there was a mix up with my blood work and he had to take some before my operation, he explained everything well and a very calming voice and manner. Later when going for my operation he was very good at keeping everything calm and did his job perfectly

Following my operation Dr C. Marshall visited my bed with nurse and updated me on the operation and answered all my questions. I found this extremely helpful and reassuring. S. Johnston
